June 2023 Update

FreeBSD at 30

Message from the Executive Director

It’s June and we’re celebrating FreeBSD’s 30th Anniversary! It was 30 years ago that the name FreeBSD was chosen for this incredible open source project that is continuing to grow, innovate and lead. The Foundation has been proudly supporting FreeBSD for over 23 years, with some of our team members participating in the FreeBSD Project in the early days. So, we are excited to kick off next week’s celebrations with you, the FreeBSD community!

We’ve dedicated our June Newsletter to FreeBSD’s 30th Anniversary sharing information about FreeBSD’s long history and the coolest timeline around, the FreeBSD Journal 30th Anniversary issue, and ideas on how you can celebrate wherever you are located around the world!

I also included a fundraising update since we’re nearly half-way through 2023 (How is that possible?), and I wanted to showcase what your donations are helping to fund this year.

I’m so thrilled to wish a Happy 30th Anniversary to FreeBSD and every one of us involved with the community – whether for decades or days. We are part of this family that continues to improve and innovate the operating system, documentation, processes, testing, security, and the community itself.

Thank you for everything you do to support FreeBSD. We wouldn’t be where we are without you!

Now, sit back and enjoy our newsletter.

FreeBSD Timeline

This week, we’re celebrating 30 years of FreeBSD! The Foundation took a look back through the Project’s history and, with the collaboration of the FreeBSD Journal team, created a new FreeBSD timeline. Spanning from the first timeshare operating systems, all the way to today, the timeline highlights some of the important breakthroughs and developments that have helped FreeBSD endure for 3 decades.

Fundraising Update

It’s June and for many of us in North America, we’re starting to see a glimmer of summer peaking around the corner. I cherish all the seasons, even the cold of winter, but summer is by far my favorite season of the year. Kids are out of school, giving them a chance to explore and just be kids. We grown ups get to spend more time outside doing fun activities like going on leisurely long runs and nurturing our gardens.

It’s also a time to reflect on what we’ve accomplished so far this year. We’re not quite half way through the year yet, but next week we will be celebrating a major milestone in the FreeBSD world!

It’s FreeBSD’s 30th Anniversary and we are proud to not only celebrate with the community, but also to be supporting this incredible project for over 23 years now! Over the years we’ve increased our support of the Project in many areas. We’ve also increased our fundraising efforts to fund that work. Where does that funding go?
