FreeBSD Foundation Names Justin Gibbs as New Board President

Foundation’s Founder Returns as Board President

Boulder, CO – June 20, 2019 – FreeBSD Foundation has announced that Justin Gibbs has been elected as the new President of the Board of Directors, at the FreeBSD Foundation’s annual board meeting in Ottawa, Canada on May 14, 2019. Gibbs replaces George Neville-Neil, who stepped down as President of the Board of Directors in early May 2019.

The new FreeBSD Foundation Board of Directors includes President and Founder Justin T. Gibbs, Vice President Benedict Reuschling, Secretary Philip Paeps, Treasurer Marshall Kirk McKusick, and Directors Hiroki Sato, George Neville-Neil and Robert N. M. Watson.

“We’re very excited that Justin is returning as President of our Board of Directors,” said Deb Goodkin, Executive Director of the FreeBSD Foundation. “Justin’s background with FreeBSD, his expertise in many technical fields, and his vision for the future will help advance the FreeBSD Foundation and FreeBSD Project,” she added. “I’d also like to thank outgoing board member Kylie Liang for her service to the board since 2016, and thank George Neville-Neil for serving as president over the past few years,” she said.

Gibbs is currently a software engineer at Facebook, and his experience has ranged from office application development at Microsoft to embedded systems for general aviation aircraft at Avidyne. A member of the FreeBSD Development Team since 1993, Gibbs has contributed to many areas of the FreeBSD operating system, and is best known for his work on the SCSI subsystem.

“I’m delighted to have been elected as President of the Board of Directors of the FreeBSD Foundation,” said Justin Gibbs. “FreeBSD has always been my passion and I’m excited to be able to contribute again in this way to move the foundation and project forward,” he added.

After serving on the FreeBSD Core Team from 1995 to 2000, Gibbs created the FreeBSD Foundation to provide a non-profit framework for funding FreeBSD development and community support. Since 2000, Gibbs has served as President, Treasurer and Director of FreeBSD Foundation Board.
