We are seeking an experienced systems or developer relations engineer to join our team as our  Solutions Specialist. This is a new role, combining technical expertise in using FreeBSD, or similar operating systems, to solve larger problems. You will help bridge the gap between FreeBSD’s technical strengths and its commercial potential, helping organizations realize the value of adopting FreeBSD to solve their problems. In addition, by fostering collaboration and encouraging engagement with the FreeBSD project, this role will help expand the number of developers contributing to the platform, driving innovation and strengthening the FreeBSD ecosystem

This role combines technical expertise with exceptional communication skills to bridge the gap between FreeBSD developers and corporate users and developers. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in system design and be adept at explaining complex technical concepts in a clear and engaging manner. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Identify, organize, and lead working groups within the project to foster innovation and address specific areas needing development. Ensure objectives are clearly defined, and the groups are effectively working towards these objectives.
  • Help corporate developers and users of FreeBSD understand and succeed with FreeBSD, by developing comprehensive documentation, tutorials, and solution-based demos.
  • Collaborate with Marketing to write comprehensive and engaging blog posts, tutorials, and articles to help users understand and utilize FreeBSD effectively.
  • Serve as an SME or SME liaison in the production and presentation of technical marketing content.
  • Periodically, collaborate with Marketing to highlight development work happening in the Project. 
  • Translate complex technical concepts and present them in ways that are appropriate for different audiences and varying skill levels.
  • Understand developers and their needs to help overcome challenges and provide this feedback to the Project and Foundation.
  • Facilitate collaboration in the development community and be involved in important technical discussions.
  • Conduct technical workshops and training sessions, and present at technology conferences to educate developers and users about FreeBSD’s features,  capabilities, and use cases.
  • Act as technical resource during partner engagements, including collecting requirements, scoping sponsored development work, and helping craft proposals.
  • Gather and analyze feedback from Project and corporate developers to inform the FF on their needs and help prioritize features and improvements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to raise awareness of user concerns and develop solutions to enhance the overall user experience.

Optional Opportunities

  • Develop learning paths and identify and help create the educational material to help onboard new developers quickly.
  • Give technical talks on FreeBSD at relevant conferences and events.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • At least five years experience in software development, developer relations or equivalent on Open Source operating systems (GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, or another BSD)
  • Experience with open source development practices
  • University degree or equivalent experience in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Passionate about technology and staying up-to-date with the latest trends in operating systems and software development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across teams.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Experience providing technical content for various skill levels and audiences. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with community members, developers, and team members
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Job Type

Full-time Position. Part-time or contract may be considered.

Salary

In compliance with Colorado’s Equal Pay for Equal Work Act (EPEWA) we are disclosing the salary range for roles that could be performed in Colorado.

If performed in Colorado as a full-time position, this position has a salary range of $62,000-$110,000.

The actual base salary will be dependent on various factors relevant to the position and candidate such as geographical location, candidate qualifications, relevant job-related work experience, education, and skillset.
