The Foundation previously funded projects to improve the Linux ABI layer (“Linuxulator”), with a focus on infrastructure and diagnostic tools. These earlier projects built a good foundation for further work and fixed many issues, but the user-facing impact was not necessarily clear.
The Foundation has awarded a development grant to Edward Tomasz Napierała to investigate running under the Linuxulator a number of popular client-facing and server related Linux applications, and fix or document identified issues.
Server software applications of interest will be drawn from popular images in Docker Hub. A number of client-facing applications will be identified, from basic “smoke test” cases such as xterm, to large applications such as Firefox, Chrome, VLC, and others.
This project was completed in the first quarter of 2021.
