This year we’re providing a more in-depth look at the Foundation’s budget to give the community a clearer view of how resources are used to support FreeBSD.

The FreeBSD Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies entirely on donations. Since 2000, we’ve supported the Project through software development, advocacy, infrastructure, and serving as its legal home. Over time, our budgeting process has matured to better show how funds are allocated.

As you review the 2025 budget summary, here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Staffing and Contractors: Totals include staff as well as short- and long-term contractors. Their work may span several categories.

  • General OS Support: Covers operating system improvements, bug fixes, and security work.

  • Conferences and Sponsorships: Vendor and developer summits organized by the Foundation, along with BSD events we sponsor, are grouped under software development.

  • Infrastructure Support: A large share is dedicated to refreshing the clusteradm systems that power FreeBSD infrastructure.

  • Travel: Includes travel for board, staff, and contractors.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the overall budget for 2025 along with a breakout of the funding going towards software development work.

While the total expenses for 2025 are greater than the projected revenue, this is a deliberate decision by the Board. Years ago, the board agreed to utilize the reserve fund specifically so we could invest in areas that accelerate the growth of the Project. By drawing on these reserves, we can address important needs today rather than postponing work that will strengthen FreeBSD’s future.

It’s also important to note that the 2025 budget should be seen as a guideline rather than a fixed plan. The Foundation will continue to evaluate fundraising results and community needs throughout the year, adjusting spending where necessary to ensure the best use of our resources.

All of these choices come back to one goal: keeping FreeBSD healthy and growing. The Foundation is here to help the Project thrive—by managing and funding key development efforts, maintaining strong infrastructure, creating opportunities for the community to connect and learn, and amplifying FreeBSD’s voice through advocacy. None of this would happen without the support of the FreeBSD community. By working together, we can keep FreeBSD reliable, innovative, and ready for the future.
