The FreeBSD Foundation was pleased to be a part of COSCon ’19, which took place in Shanghai, China on November 2-3, 2019. With over 1500 attendees, COSCon is one of the largest open source conferences in mainland China. It is organized by Kai-yuan-she (a word-by-word translation of “open”-“source”-“society”), which is a kind of non-profit in China.
The two-day conference featured several keynotes, as well as, hands on sessions by people from sectors including government, companies, academia, and open source projects. The open source projects from outside mainland China included the GNOME Foundation, Apache Software Foundation, Github (now a part of Microsoft), and us. Foundation Board Member, Hiroki Sato gave a talk on governance of the FreeBSD project and collaboration models between FreeBSD and the enterprise users in the “Open Source Operating Systems” session.
On the second day of the conference, Hiroki joined fellow attendees from companies such as Tencent, Didi, Huawei, Microsoft/Github, and others from outside of China in a “round-table” discussion. The group covered several topics related to Chinese open source activities including how to bridge the Chinese open source community with the rest of the world.
We look forward to attending future events, such as these, to raise awareness about the Project and ensure that FreeBSD is included in open source ecosystem discussions around the world.
