The FreeBSD Foundation is looking for a motivated, self-directed, and hands-on individual who will manage our marketing efforts as a Senior Technical FreeBSD Marketing Manager. This candidate will combine their technical and marketing backgrounds to help increase awareness and adoption of FreeBSD and be a key advocate for the FreeBSD Project and Foundation. The candidate should have experience in operating systems, an understanding of the markets where FreeBSD is strong, and the ability to identify opportunities where FreeBSD can play a role.
The candidate will be able to engage with both technical and business audiences to craft campaigns that generate excitement and interest in the adoption of FreeBSD. The candidate has strong written, visual, and oral communication skills to support the many marketing channels for promoting FreeBSD. The individual will help identify opportunities for FreeBSD and work with our internal staff and community members to craft technical documentation.
What you will do
For the FreeBSD Operating System
- Work with the technology team, to gain an understanding of FreeBSD’s strengths and benefits and develop the messaging and content to show business decision-makers how FreeBSD solves their problems.
- Increase the visibility and adoption of FreeBSD by identifying the key markets where it is strong and, in collaboration with key Foundation stakeholders, develop an evangelism strategy in related marketing channels, publications, and social media platforms.
- You will collaborate with developers to translate key features and capabilities into messages that drive awareness and adoption.
- Working with the technology team, identify and build solutions to demonstrate product value.
- Drive customer conversations to promote adoption, gather use case information, and inform feature development.
- Engage with community members to understand their challenges, and identify ways we can help.
- Identify key technology and open source events to promote FreeBSD and work with the community to find local technical contributors to promote FreeBSD through FreeBSD presentations and FreeBSD tables.
- Submit and present FreeBSD-focused talks at events, webinars, and companies.
For the FreeBSD Foundation
- Work with our technology team and technical writers to promote Foundation led technical projects, highlighting the value these projects bring to FreeBSD, and the project being made.
- Promote the Foundation’s overall efforts to support the FreeBSD Project and highlight the value we are providing with donations.
- Manage outside vendor relations (graphic design, PR/AR).
- Develop and track success metrics.
What you will bring
- 5+ years of product or technical marketing experience with operating systems, systems engineering, embedded systems, networking or security equipment, traditional or cloud-native development, databases, or cloud computing.
- 3-5 years of hands-on experience as a user of FreeBSD or similar system.
- University degree or equivalent experience.
- Critical thinking skills with a proven ability to develop, implement, measure, and continuously improve creative solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to connect and build trust with highly technical audiences and succinctly convey the value of advanced and diverse technologies.
- Ability to translate FreeBSD features into user benefits and outcomes.
- Superb written and verbal communication and presentation skills; experience presenting to medium-to-large audiences.
- Experience working effectively in a persuasion-oriented, cross-functional, democratic open source community.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
Job Type
Full-time Position. Part-time or contract may be considered.
Salary
The actual base salary will be dependent on various factors relevant to the position and candidate such as geographical location, candidate qualifications, relevant job-related work experience, education, and skillset.
In compliance with Colorado’s Equal Pay for Equal Work Act (EPEWA) we are disclosing the salary range for roles that could be performed in Colorado.
If performed in Colorado as a full-time position, this position has a salary range of $87,000 – $120,000
